INTRODUCTION

In December 2004 the Welsh Assembly Government announced that two major improvement schemes for the A40 trunk road in Pembrokeshire had been included in the 2004 supplement to the 2002 Trunk Road Forward Programme. These would be Phase 2 schemes which could be ready to start by April 2010 but the first scheme between Penblewin and Slebech Park would be ready to start in December 2007, subject to satisfactory completion of statutory procedures and the availability of finance.

The trunk road between Penblewin and Slebech has a substandard alignment with limited safe overtaking opportunities and high accident rates. Where the trunk road passes through Robeston Wathen, it is narrow with little or no footways.

The A40 Trunk Road Penblewin to Slebech Park Improvement scheme which incorporates the Preferred Route for the Robeston Wathen Bypass that was published in 1996, would remove through traffic from the village of Robeston Wathen, removing the effects of severance caused by trunk road traffic. It would also provide safer overtaking opportunities in both eastbound and westbound directions and new public rights of way would provide safe crossing facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians.

The A40 trunk road together with the A48, A477 and the M4 motorway forms part of the Trans European Network -Transport (TEN-T) in South West Wales, and is a strategically important link between the National motorway network and the port of Fishguard

There is also a lack of crossing facilities across the A40 for pedestrians, equestrians and cyclists who use the existing network of paths in the area.

Between Penblewin and Slebech Park, the road suffers from a number of problems, including community severance in Robeston Wathen, a substandard alignment, a large number of accesses and junctions, a lack of safe overtaking opportunities and a poor accident record, especially in Robeston Wathen and near Canaston Bridge.

A40

We would take this opportunity to thank you for your patience during the extensive work being carried old on the original A40 Canaston Bridge.

To ensure the safety of both the travelling public and our workforce we have used the 9.30 to 2.30 road closure and traffic light control.

Unfortunately due to the snow and ice just before and just after Christmas we lost approximately eight working days, to offset this, our site teams have been working prolonged shifts this week but due to the logistics involved we were not able to complete the work required in the original time scale.

Therefore we would ask for your further patience as we complete the outstanding surfacing work using a partial road closure on Monday 31st January and Tuesday 1st February between 9.30 and 2.30pm.

The whole site team appretiates your understanding, but should you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact our Phil Baker on 01437 541462 or 07739 634021.
